Traveler, Reader, Advocate
As a veteran teacher, every day with students is an opportunity for growth and curiosity. We grow as a human community when our children are guided and supported to be their best selves.
“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.” - Maria Montessori
Humor
Sharing a laugh builds bonds and relationships. Students crave recognition of the absurdities of life and the release of tension that surrounds them. Having a laugh together creates community and strengthens group identity.
Representation
When learners see themselves in the curriculum, their engagement with and investment in their education increases.
Holism
Successful education is multidisciplinary with intentional integration of real world skill-building. Knowing how to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and organize one’s time will set the conditions for success in the classroom and the world beyond.
Equity
Every learner should receive the supports they need to have the opportunity to succeed.
Collaboration
Teaching is a team sport; no teacher can be successful alone. Working with administration, special education interventionists, co-teachers, teacher aides, parents and caregivers, and the students themselves is essential for student success.
Rigor
Education should challenge learners to think deeply and engage authentically with real world problems and high quality texts. Additionally, by holding students to high expectations while building students’ sense of accountability, teachers communicate their confidence in students’ abilities.
Core Values
“The teacher is of course an artist, but being an artist does not mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.”
- Paulo Friere,
